As the host of our latest Head Resourcing Talking Data and AI webinar session, I had the pleasure of welcoming Gary Crawford, Founder of Owendale Advisory, to share his insight for designing digital experiences that are not just smart, but truly intelligent.
Gary’s webinar left us thinking about the role of software, not just as a tool, but as something that can learn, evolve, and respond like a human being. Here's what really stood out for me.
The Problem with Traditional Software
Gary started by highlighting a problem many of us encounter every day: most digital systems are rigid. They follow predetermined logic, can’t adapt to new situations, and often leave users frustrated when things don’t go exactly as planned. We’ve all felt it, when an app or tool just doesn’t “get” what we need.
Enter Adaptive Intelligence
Gary introduced the idea of adaptive intelligence, where software systems learn from user behaviour and evolve over time. It’s a powerful concept that goes beyond AI buzzwords, it is about building software that senses and responds, much like a human would.
With AI and behavioural data now more accessible this isn’t just about theory, creating truly intelligent systems is well within our reach.
Three Things To Consider
A mindset shift – We need to stop building software that’s locked into fixed workflows. Instead, we should design systems that can flex and adapt as user needs change.
Better use of data – It’s not just about having data, it’s about understanding behaviour in real time and designing systems that can react to it meaningfully.
Bringing AI into the build process – AI shouldn’t be an afterthought. It needs to be part of how we prototype, develop, and iterate.
Real-World Relevance
Previously Zelim shared their real-world examples of AI-driven maritime safety tech and City Facilities Management shared their brand new product CAIT which is delivering positive business change and business improvements. These examples aren’t just concepts; they’re live, working examples of what’s possible when we rethink how software should behave.
My Takeaway
What resonated most for me is that building better digital experiences isn’t just about better technology—it’s about designing systems that can genuinely understand and support the people using them. It’s a shift in how we think, plan, and build. And that’s the kind of thinking we want to spotlight in this series.
If you missed it live, I really encourage you to catch the replay. And keep an eye out for our next Talking Data and AI session on 27th August, it’s shaping up to be just as insightful!
