When Cyber Security meets the White House

On Thursday night in the fabulous surroundings of The Western Club in Glasgow, we held our latest IT Directors’ Forum.

The event was generously hosted by Morgan Stanley and attendees included a range of IT leaders from across industry, including CIOs and CTOs from companies such as HSBC, NCR, Heineken, Hymans, Addleshaw Goddard and Pinsent Masons.

Our speaker for the evening, Jen Easterly – Managing Director and Head of Fusion Centres for Morgan Stanley based in New York – was one of the most remarkable people who has spoken at our forums and I’m sure we will remember her talk for a long time to come.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Jen served as the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism on the National Security Council staff; she also served as the Deputy for Counterterrorism at the National Security Agency and was Commander of the US Army’s first cyber battalion where she was responsible for driving offensive cyber operations.

It was a truly fascinating evening with great discussion from all parties around topics ranging from Cyber, Fusion Centres, IOT, women in technology and the intricacies of governments collaborating with social media/content platforms.

Of particular interest to me personally were Jen’s thoughts on women in technology as the numbers both in the US and UK are still hugely troubling if we are to address the challenge of getting more girls into tech at a younger age. Jen is one of the best examples of truly inspiring women leaders who could have a huge effect on shaping the futures of our young people and hopefully over the coming years we can leverage her passion and experience to benefit Scotland’s women in technology initiatives.
