Journey to the Cloud

Cloud

I’m sure by now everyone knows about the Cloud – what it does, who lives there, how difficult it is to reach with a stepladder etc. but on the odd chance some organisations or CIOs aren’t as up to speed as me (?!) we thought we’d make it the topic of our first IT Directors’ Forum of 2017.

We’ve held these forums for the last 14 years and essentially they are informal peer to peer networking events with a host company, some topical speakers and a dinner with engaging conversation.

Our recent event was hosted by the IT Director of Hymans Robertson in their fantastic top floor office in Semple Street, with views looking out onto Edinburgh castle, which made for a spectacular backdrop for our dinner.

We had 14 attendees, spanning CIO’s & IT Directors from a range of companies (Tesco Bank, RBS, Scottish Power, NCR, Ingenico, Martin Currie, APEX hotels to name a few) but all with an interest in the topic at hand which in last night’s case was Cloud adoption.

Our speakers were from award winning IT consultancy BJSS (www.bjss.com) who have been involved in a large number of major cloud adoption programmes across the UK and part of their talk was discussing the various approaches organisations take and some case studies and war stories.

The presentation was very well received and stimulated lots of discussion, challenge and interest that continued on through dinner. In addition to the Cloud, key conversation topics included Agile, DevOps, Security, Squads, Rugby and the Gym (these last two are not new IT acronyms)!

Overall, it was a great evening made all the more enjoyable by the engagement of the attendees and quality of the speaker, host and catering.

Next quarter we are likely to be holding an event in Glasgow, hosted by a major financial services company and hopefully a very interesting speaker on Cyber Security from the highest echelons of the US government. I’m sure this will be another fantastic event!
