Contractor Information

A significant percentage of the Head Resourcing business is dedicated towards finding Contract and Interim opportunities for our jobseekers. We do advise and place first time contractors but the majority of our Contract & Interim workers are experienced independent consultants who have chosen this way of operating to suit their personal circumstances and financial needs.
We deal with Contract and Interim job opportunities within IT, Accounting & Finance, Human Resources and Procurement.

Why do organisations use Contractors and Interims?

  • When they are unable to attract permanent staff because of location, salary competition or skills shortages.
  • To overcome temporary peaks in workload, or when they have capital projects that demand a short to medium term boost in numbers of workers.
  • When overcoming headcount restrictions, where they have money available to complete a task or project but have a strict headcount policy.
  • When they are doing something new or different and require skills that are not available within their permanent workforce.
  • To perform maintenance or support work and free up their permanent staff to work on more urgent development or project work.
  • Interim workers tend to be engaged to fulfil a specific role for a fixed period of time; usually to cover for long term absence of a staff member, or when a role may disappear in the longer term.

Can anyone become a Contractor or Interim?

Contractors & Interims cover the full range of skills and experience from low level technicians up the most senior Programme Management, Human Resource, Procurement or Accounting posts.
To be successful, you must be conscientious, extremely professional and be conscious of providing your client with value for money. In Contract and Interim work you are only as good as your last job reference, so guard your reputation jealously!
This means accepting the standards of discipline on site, including timekeeping and dress, as well as taking on local working methods and standards. You also need to be able to fit in with an established team and be seen to do your job competently without ruffling any feathers.

How long is a typical Contract or Interim role?

Generally initial contracts are from three to six months and you are usually legally bound to honour the full term of the contract. Often contracts are extended because of project needs or because the client is delighted with the work being produced, and it is not unusual for contract roles to continue for more than a year in duration.
In the current climate of European legislation is unlikely that a role will continue for more than two years without a break.

What’s the pay like?

Contractors and Interim’s are usually paid substantially more than permanent employees, although the rates for a role can vary considerably. Our consultants should be able to give you an accurate feel for rates your skills would attract, please feel free to contact us on 0131 625 9600.

We pay our Contractors and Interims on a monthly basis, but you do need to provide a signed timesheet and an invoice if appropriate. Most of our Contractors and Interims operate through their own limited company, or an umbrella company, however we can also operate contracts on a PAYE basis depending on our clients requirements.

Our Contractors and Interims operate on both an hourly rate and daily rate basis as appropriate.

How do contracts work?

All of our Contract and Interim opportunities are contractually bound, reflecting the contractual obligations we are adopting on behalf of our client. You will be legally required to fulfil the terms of the contract you are signing and this may include but is not restricted to, hours of work, location, travel, standard of work and confidentiality. Most of our clients look for a strict code of conduct whilst you are with them, and in most cases they would have the right to terminate your contract if there is any breach.

We aim to make our contracts as IR35 compliant as possible, although you should be aware there are no guarantees with regard to the Inland Revenue interpretation of your work status. To find out more go to following Inland Revenue link, www.hmrc.gov.uk/ir35/faq.htm

We always keep up to date with regard to current trends and guidelines and subscribe to the relevant recruitment industry standards.

What are advantages of contracting through Head Resourcing?

We aim, on all occasions to give honest, straight-forward advice and guidance at all stages of the process.
You will always have a dedicated point of contact whilst you are working with us and the standards of service you receive will be second to none. We regularly arrange social events and this will provide an opportunity to get to know us better and also meet some of your fellow Contractors and Interims.
We always pay on time, provided you submit your timesheets and invoices by the dates we provide you with.
Head Resourcing has significant financial strength, and is rated at 98% (Creditsafe, January 2006) making Head Resourcing a highly credit worthy company. You can always be confident of payment when working with our business.
